What You Should Know
Barb's PERFECT PET GROOMING
What you should know about grooming
** ALL dogs require regular grooming to help maintain good health. **
** Human shampoo (even baby shampoo) should NOT be used on dogs.  The dogs
Ph balance is completely different from that of people.  Human shampoo can be very
damaging to dogs skin and coats.  A proper dog shampoo should always be used.

** Dogs nails should be trimmed every 4 to 8 weeks to help prevent foot, and leg pain.

** Regular ear cleaning should be done to help prevent ear infections that could lead to
    hearing lose.

** Dogs such as Bichons, Shihtzus, and Poodles should have the hair removed from the ear
canal on a regular basis to help prevent ear infection.

**
ALL dogs coats should be kept free of matting, (big tangles) to allow the coat to do its job
    properly.

** Dogs coats are a part of their heating and cooling system.  In the winter they protect them
from the cold and in the summer they help protect them from the sun and the heat.
Pockets of air in the coat help to create a barrier between the skin and the elemets.  The
coat must move freely to perform this function.

** Double coated dogs, have just that, two coats.  The first coat (the guard hair) is meant to
protect the dog year around.  The second coat (the undercoat- that stuff thats all over your
house), is meant to help keep the dog warm in the winter and should be properly brushed
out when he/she started to shed in the spring.  The undercoat will grow back in the fall.

** Double coated dogs such as Goldens, Chows, Poms, or Collies should
NOT be shaved.
Shaving these types of dogs can  cause skin and coat problems.  (We will require you to
sign a waiver if you want us to shave this type of dog.)

** Light colored dogs, thin coated dogs, shaved dogs, just to name a few can easily be
sunburned.  Sunscreen is strongly recommended for these types of dog. (Sun protection is
now on the market for dogs.)

** Proper diet is also a factor in the condition of a dogs coat and skin.  Poor quality foods can
lead to dry skin, oily coat, odors, or stained coats.  It won't matter what kind of (dog)
shampoo we use, if the food is the cause of the problem, the bath will only temporarily
    fix it.

** New information shows that Anal Glands should only be expressed internally, and should
    be done by your veterinarian.
